Earth Month makeover: Give your home a spring-cleaning glow-up

Published on

Warmer weather and blooming flowers make Earth Month the perfect time to refresh your home. By approaching your Spring cleaning with sustainability in mind, you can declutter your home while helping keep Huntsville clean and green.

Donate Instead of Tossing

When cleaning out closets and garages, you’ll likely come across items you no longer use. Instead of throwing them away, consider whether they could still be useful to someone else.

Donating to a thrift store during Earth Month is a great way to reduce landfill waste and give the item a second life. You can also organize a neighborhood swap or share items through local community groups. Keeping usable items in circulation not only reduces waste but also saves the resources and energy needed to produce new products.

Choose Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

Many traditional cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can impact indoor air quality and eventually make their way into our waterways.

Look for cleaning products made with plant-based ingredients and minimal packaging. Even better, you can create simple DIY cleaners with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and lemon.

Reduce Waste While You Clean

Spring cleaning can sometimes lead to a lot of disposable waste like paper towels and single-use wipes. Use washable cloths or microfiber towels instead of disposable products or repurpose old shirts or towels as cleaning rags. You can also choose refillable cleaning products or concentrated formulas that reduce packaging waste.

Recycle What You Can

As you sort through belongings, separate recyclable materials, like paper and cardboard, from trash whenever possible.

Items like electronics, batteries, and light bulbs can be taken to the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of Huntsville’s Household Hazardous Waste facility located at 1055 A Cleaner Way. It’s open every weekday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Taking a little extra time to recycle these properly helps prevent harmful materials from ending up in landfills and our water sources.

Refresh Your Outdoor Spaces

Earth Month is also a great reminder to care for the spaces outside your home. Take time to pick up litter around your yard or neighborhood, tidy up garden beds and sweep patios and sidewalks. If you’re doing yard work, consider composting leaves, grass clippings and plant debris.
