Published on January 2, 2026
The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is accepting applications for its Spring 2026 Citizens Police Academy, a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and see how local law enforcement operates.

The academy is an engaging, hands-on program designed to build stronger connections between the community and the police. Participants will gain a closer look at the department’s structure, policies and day-to-day operations through classroom sessions and demonstrations.
“The Citizens Police Academy gives you a front-row seat to the work we do every day to protect and serve,” said HPD Chief Kirk Giles. “It’s a rare opportunity to step inside our world, ask questions and see firsthand how trust and teamwork keep Huntsville safe.”
Classes will be held weekly at the Huntsville Public Safety Training Academy, 5365 Triana Blvd., starting Tuesday, March 24 through May 26. The nine-week program will meet every Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m.
The program is open to individuals who:
- Are at least 19 years old
- Live or work in the city of Huntsville
- Successfully complete a background check
- No prior felony convictions
- No outstanding warrants
- No pending criminal cases
