Fourth of July DUI checkpoints planned across Huntsville

Published on July 1, 2025

The Huntsville Police Department’s (HPD) DUI Task Force will conduct traffic safety checkpoints over the Fourth of July weekend, July 4-6, as part of its ongoing effort to keep roadways safe during one of the busiest and most dangerous travel times of the year.

The Fourth of July holiday is often associated with cookouts, fireworks and family fun – but also, unfortunately, an increase in impaired driving. HPD’s enforcement efforts aim to deter unsafe behavior, prevent crashes and save lives.

“Drinking and driving don’t mix,” HPD DUI Task Force Sgt. Antonio Shorter said. “If you plan to consume alcohol, plan for a sober ride. Don’t let a poor decision ruin your life of someone else’s.”

Drivers passing through a checkpoint will be asked to provide a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration.

HPD uses data from the National Alabama Highway Safety Office (NAHSO) to determine high-crash areas and impaired driving hotspots throughout the City. Officers may conduct checkpoints at one or more of the following locations:

  • Jordan Lane and Sparkman Drive
  • Mastin Lake Road and Pulaski Pike
  • Bankhead Parkway and Douglas Lane
  • Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road
  • Church Street and Pratt Avenue
  • Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street
  • University Drive and Old Monrovia Road
  • University Drive and Research Park Boulevard

If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, you are encouraged to call HPD’s non-emergency line at 256-722-7100. Be prepared to give a description of the vehicle, its location and the direction of travel. For emergencies or immediate safety threats, call 911.

HPD urges everyone to plan before the party starts. Use a designated driver, rideshare app or public transit.
