Governors Drive traffic safety study seeks community input at open house

The City of Huntsville will hold an open house on Tuesday, Sept. 29, for the community to provide insight and feedback as part of a corridor traffic safety study on Governors Drive. The event will be from 4-8 p.m. at the Gathering Place in First Baptist Church, 600 Governors Dr. SW.
The City’s Planning Department has worked with Alta Planning + Design consultants on the project that has included walking tours, an online survey and pop-up events to interact with the community. The medical district, anchored by Huntsville Hospital, has been a focus of the study due to heavy pedestrian traffic.
The corridor study area covers an 8.85-mile stretch from 14th Street on the west end to Caldwell Lane in the Big Cove area.
The study will serve as a strategic roadmap to identify and address traffic safety challenges. By combining data analysis with community input, the plan will develop targeted solutions to create safer streets for people who drive, walk, bike, roll and use Huntsville Transit.
“We’ve been busy over the last several months and we are looking forward to the open house to have our largest community engagement in the study,” Manager of Long-Range Planning Dennis Madsen said. “With the medical district being a focal point of the study, we are eager to get input from professionals who work at Huntsville Hospital and surrounding facilities on making the district as safe as possible.”
At the open house, members of the Planning Department and Alta will be available to discuss ideas and hear from residents.
Huntsville Transit will offer free rides to and from the meeting. There are transit stops within one-quarter mile of First Baptist Church. Riders should tell the operator they are attending the Safety Study Open House. The facility is ADA accessible.
