Huntsville Animal Services Celebrates National Clear the Shelters Month with ‘Stars, Stripes & Second Chances’

Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) will celebrate National Clear the Shelters Month in August, a nationwide effort inviting residents to adopt, foster and support local animal welfare efforts.
Throughout the month, HAS will host patriotic‑themed pet adoption events under its 2026 banner, “Stars, Stripes & Second Chances.” HAS will waive adoption fees on select dates and special promotions designed to help every pet find a loving home.
“Our ‘Stars, Stripes & Second Chances’ campaign connects the spirit of community with the joy of pet adoption,” HAS Director John Fischer said. “Give a shelter pet the freedom to thrive this August. Whether you adopt, foster or volunteer, every act helps us clear the shelter and give animals a second chance.”
Key Dates and Events:
- Saturday, Aug. 8: Adopt on the Spot at Woody Anderson Ford, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. (2500 Jordan Ln NW). Dog and cat adoptions with onsite HAS support.
- Week of Aug. 10–15: Waived adoption fees. Follow HAS social media channels for all the details.
- Week of August 17-22: HAS Foster Appreciation Week celebrates Life, Liberty and the Paw-suit of Happiness.
- Friday, Aug. 28: To wrap up the month, HAS will host their annual Slumber Paw‑ty, 5–10 p.m. Pajamas are encouraged as we celebrate late‑night adoptions, waived fees, food trucks and hourly social media challenges.
All HAS adoptions include up‑to‑date vaccinations, microchipping and spay/neuter surgery.
The HAS campaign will feature George the dog and Martha the cat—colonial‑era mascots who bring historic Americana flair to adoptable pet spotlights, foster appreciation features and shelter social media posts.
Clear the Shelters is led by NBCUniversal Local in partnership with TV stations across the country. Since 2015, the national campaign has helped more than 1.3 million pets find homes and raised more than $5.6 million for shelters and rescues.
