Huntsville City Council approves 2027 fiscal year balanced operating budget

With a focus on infrastructure and quality of life, the Huntsville City Council passed the operating budget for the 2027 fiscal year as well as two long-range capital plan budgets.

New road improvement projects along with road resurfacing and maintenance total close to $40 million while the City continues to invest in parks and greenways. Public safety remain a priority with authorization for 18 additional public safety personnel and plans for a new police precinct and multiple fire stations.

The operating budget for the General Fund FY27 is $360,593,840, which includes $14,788,543 for outside agencies. The Lodging & Liquor fund provides $17,015,229 for outside agencies.

“I applaud the Council for their work and shared vision for what is best both for our residents and our employees,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “We always strive to keep residents foremost in our minds as we make funding decisions. Because of the collaboration between Council Members, the administration and our department heads, this budget provides a conscientious road map for the upcoming year.”

Departmental and Capital Plans funding highlights of the proposed FY27 Budget:

  • New road improvement projects totaling $17.5M consisting of County Line Road, Edinburg Drive and Resolute Way along with moving forward with the design on the next phase of Northern Bypass East of Memorial Parkway
  • Multimodal transportation project consisting of new greenways and sidewalks totaling $15M
  • Reinvestment corridors near Research Park, Mill Creek and downtown totaling $18M
  • Road resurfacing and maintenance totaling over $22.3 million
  • Authorizes an addition of 18 public safety personnel
  • Multi-year capital plan provides for a police precinct, multiple fire stations and library facilities
  • Improvements and expansions at several parks totaling $35.4 million
  • Commercial redevelopment along Memorial Parkway
  • Continued investment in the City’s greenway network
  • 2% cost-of-living adjustment for City employees

The City’s fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30.
