Huntsville Fire & Rescue opens application window for firefighters

Eager to serve the public and protect someone facing one of their worst days? The opportunity is now available as Huntsville Fire & Rescue (HFR) has opened applications for 2026.
To apply, visit JoinHuntsvilleFireandRescue.com. The application window, which opened Sept. 12, will close Thursday, Oct. 22.
“Every day, I tell people that working for HFR is the best job in the world,” said Capt. Cory Green, who leads the department’s recruiting efforts. “Helping those in difficult situations is a special calling and HFR is seeking the best people to answer that call. It’s a challenging job, both physically and mentally, but it’s also tremendously fulfilling to know you were there to make a difference when someone needed it the most.”
Upon submitting an application, candidates must also schedule their orientation for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), which will be held Nov. 3-5.
HFR will also hold two open houses for applicants to learn more about being a firefighter and interact with HFR leadership.
- Oct. 1 from 6-8 p.m. at Station 1, 2110 Clinton Ave. W
- Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at Huntsville Public Safety Training Academy, 5365 SW Triana Blvd.
In preparation for the written exam Nov. 17-19, HFR will hold study sessions at the Public Safety Training Academy at 10 a.m. on Oct. 31, Nov. 7 and Nov. 14.
“We are excited to open our application window as we seek to strengthen our department,” HFR Chief Howard McFarlen said. “It’s important to know up front that the application process is difficult but the most important characteristic I am looking for is the right attitude.”
