Huntsville Police seek state-level accreditation
Published on March 26, 2026
The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is seeking to strengthen transparency, accountability and professional standards by pursuing state accreditation through the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police (AACOP)’s Accreditation Program.
The Accreditation program is a state-specific initiative designed to address Alabama’s legal and operational needs, establishing annual benchmarks focused on areas such as use of force, vehicle pursuits and evidence handling while ensuring policies, procedures and training align with best practices.
This effort builds on HPD’s long-standing accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), widely considered the gold standard in public safety, which the department has maintained since 1996 and is currently in its ninth reaccreditation cycle.
For the community, accreditation reinforces public trust by demonstrating a commitment to transparency and accountability, while for officers it provides clear expectations, updated training and a framework for continuous improvement.
If approved, HPD will work with AACOP to confirm compliance with all standards, followed by an initial review and ongoing annual evaluations. This partnership reflects the City’s continued commitment to professional policing and high-quality public safety services.
