March 2020 – Monthly Development Review

Construction begins on a Holiday Inn Express hotel near the Space and Rocket Center.

New office and industrial projects topped the list of non-residential projects permitted last month. New home starts more than tripled year-over-year.


Residential Permits (new construction) in Huntsville city limits:

In March, 334 housing units were permitted, 183 single- and 151 multi-family. The top tract for building permits last month was 106.21 (53 North) where 94 units were permitted, 21 single- and 73 multi-family. This is a 212% increase over March 2019, when 107 housing units (all single-family) were permitted.


Residential Certificates of Occupancy (new construction) in Huntsville city limits:

127 housing units were granted certificates of occupancy (CO’s), 100 single- and 27 multi-family. The top tract for CO’s in the month of March was 106.21 where 31 housing units were added, 4 single- and 27 multi-family. This is a 48% decrease from March 2019, when 244 housing units (101 single- and 143 multi-family) were granted CO’s.

Orange:  Contract amount greater than $1 Million

Green:  Contract amount between $500,000-$999,999

Blue: Contract amount between $100,000-$499,999
