Mayor Battle Statement on SCOTUS Ruling Regarding Online Sales Tax Collection

Published on June 21, 2018

U.S. Supreme Court

Mayor Tommy Battle released the following statement regarding today’s 5-4 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in favor of states collecting online sales tax. The court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, which has been called the “tax case of the millennium,” overturns Quill and allows states to collect sales tax from online retailers without regard to a physical presence in the state.

“The Internet has dramatically changed the way retailers do business and this decision better reflects the realities of today’s e-commerce. The online sales tax exemption has placed Huntsville businesses at an extreme disadvantage. Local companies employ local people – your friends and neighbors – and they contribute to the economic health and vitality of our community. Today’s decision makes it fair for all retailers and levels the playing field among our brick and mortar stores and global online companies.”
