Mayor’s Tree Planting Day returns Nov. 1

Published on October 21, 2025

Mayor Tommy Battle and Huntsville’s Green Team will host the Mayor’s Tree Planting Day at Brahan Spring Park on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The annual planting event brings together community volunteers who want to help grow Huntsville’s tree canopy – one of the City’s most important natural resources.

Green Team will prepare hundreds of tree planting sites and provide all the tools and supplies needed. Volunteers may drop in at any time, and all ages are welcome.

Mayor Battle, City arborist Marc Byers and Green Team will share planting tips and talk about how trees contribute more than beauty to our community.

“As our city grows, it’s more important than ever to grow our green spaces,” Mayor Battle said. “Each tree we plant is a growing investment in our quality of life, and they’re one of the most powerful tools for building sustainable, livable cities.”

Trees make neighborhoods more livable while cleaning the air, reducing energy costs and providing shade to homes, parks and streets. In urban areas like Huntsville, planting trees helps balance growth with green space and strengthens the community’s connection to nature.

“Planting in the fall sets trees up for success,” Brian Walker, director of Landscape Management said. “When you plant in cooler weather, roots can grow steadily without the stress of summer heat. By planting now, the community is giving these trees the best possible start for long-term health and growth.”

Since the first Mayor’s Tree Planting Day in 2014, the community has come together to plant nearly 2,800 trees at John Hunt Park and Brahan Spring Park. This year, the public tree planting event will add several hundred more trees.

In addition to tree planting, Green Team coordinates litter cleanup, recycling education and beautification projects throughout Huntsville.

Green Team will also give away free seedling trees while supplies last, thanks to the generous support of the Alabama Urban Forestry Association, the Arbor Day Foundation and International Paper.

Can’t make the Mayor’s Tree Planting Day but still want to help? Green Team will host another public tree planting event on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at Cavalry Hill Community Center, 2900 Fairbanks St. NW.  Hundreds of trees will be planted and all supplies will be provided.
