More highway digital message boards coming to Huntsville

Published on September 25, 2025

The City of Huntsville and the Alabama Department of Transportation entered into a funding agreement that will place digital highway message signs along U.S. 72 East, U.S. 431 and U.S. 231.

The agreement, finalized by City Council approval, totals $3.1 million. The Federal Carbon Reduction Program will cover 80% of the cost ($2.48 million) and the City will cover 20% ($640,000).

The signs will be similar to the two that are located on Interstate 565. A third message board on I-565 is in the process of completion.

“We have experienced the benefits of this technology on Interstate 565 and we look forward to the construction of more message boards,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “These signs inform drivers about what’s ahead and will make our roadways even safer.”

Addition message boards will be located on Memorial Parkway and along Governors Drive as well as another located on U.S. 72 East near Chapman Mountain. The exact locations have not been determined.
