The Huntsville City Council has approved an ordinance to name the new three-acre Huntsville Arboretum at John Hunt Park the “Joy McKee Arboretum.”
McKee retired after 22 years with the City as Director of Landscape Management, where she spearheaded efforts to improve environmental conservation, substantially expand Huntsville’s tree canopy and enhance natural public spaces. Under her leadership, the City introduced numerous nature-based recreation, community volunteering and educational opportunities – laying the foundation for Huntsville’s reputation as a green and sustainable community.
Her commitment to beautification extended beyond her department. McKee served 28 years on the board of Operation Green Team and 26 years on the City’s Beautification Board, championing initiatives that continue to shape Huntsville’s landscape.
“Joy’s vision and passion for preserving and expanding Huntsville’s green spaces have left an indelible mark on our city,” Landscape Management Director Brian Walker said. “The arboretum is a fitting tribute to her decades of work ensuring that future generations can enjoy a healthier, more beautiful environment.”
The arboretum will be located at Airport Road and Alex McAllister Drive near the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex.
