The Huntsville Police Department’s (HPD) Summer Slowdown traffic safety initiative ended Friday, July 31, following more than two months of emphasis on enforcement and public safety efforts across Huntsville that saw a significant drop in traffic fatalities.

From May 21 to July 31, officers issued 3,248 citations and 1,311 written warnings to drivers. Of those, 1,329 citations and 404 warnings were issued for speeding-related offenses.

Two traffic fatalities were reported in Huntsville during this year’s Summer Slowdown initiative, compared with eight during 2025’s enforcement efforts.

“Summer Slowdown may be over, but traffic safety remains a priority for our department,” HPD Chief Kirk Giles said. “We encourage everyone to slow down, stay focused and make responsible decisions behind the wheel. Safe driving choices can help prevent crashes and save lives.”

Summer Slowdown is part of HPD’s broader effort to improve roadway safety during the summer travel season by increasing enforcement, addressing dangerous driving behaviors and reminding drivers of their responsibility to share the road safely.

While the campaign has ended, HPD will continue efforts to reduce speeding, reckless driving and other dangerous driving behaviors on Huntsville roadways.

HPD thanks the drivers who continue to do their part to make Huntsville’s roads safer for everyone.
