New activities at Earth Day celebration highlight a month of Green Team activities

The City of Huntsville will celebrate the wonders of nature while promoting safeguarding the environment with a variety of events in April, highlighted by Earth Day on Saturday, April 12, that will include new features at the popular annual event.
Organized by the Department of Landscape Management’s Green Team, activities also include two community cleanup days in April and the Spring Plant & Cleanup Supply Giveaway.
“As the 55th anniversary of Earth Day is observed this year, Green Team is excited about the array of family-friendly events that mix fun with opportunities to learn about the importance of preserving our environment,” Landscape Management Manager Nikole Sothers said. “We’re also looking forward to new activities this year that will make our Earth Day celebration the best it’s ever been.”
Earth Day is a free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hays Nature Preserve, 7153 U.S. 431, Owens Cross Roads. New features this year include:
- Music by radio personality Lashay B from 10-11 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Science for Everyone show by Michael Green the Science Machine from 11-11:45 a.m.
- Educational bat show by Vicky the Bat Lady from 1-2 p.m.
There will also be Rise Raptor demonstrations, other earth-friendly exhibitors and interactive displays as well as a vegetable plant giveaway, face painting, hot dogs and more.
With limited space at Hays Nature Preserve, parking will also be available at the Mark Russell Recreational Center, 429 Taylor Road, with free shuttle service provided by Huntsville Transit.
Other Earth Day events this year:
- Spring Plant & Cleanup Supply Giveaway: Friday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jaycee Building, 2200 Jaycee Way SW, in John Hunt Park. The drive-thru and pick-up event will provide free tomato and cucumber plants as well as garbage bags.
- Earth Month Community Cleanup hosted by Green Team and District 1 Council Member Michelle Watkins: Saturday, April 5, from 9-11 a.m., Richard Showers, Sr., Recreation Center, 4600 Blue Spring Road NW.
- Earth Day Cleanup at Gateway Greenway: On the nationally observed Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, from 4-6 p.m. at Gateway Greenway Park, 116 Cleveland Ave. NW.
Green Team will provide tools needed for all cleanups, including litter sticks, gloves, safety vests and garbage bags.
