Numbers don’t lie: Green Team had banner year in 2024

Published on December 27, 2024

Green Team enjoyed a banner year in 2024, expanding education programs and making Huntsville a cleaner and even more beautiful city.

The numbers tell a dizzying story of community outreach – from almost 10,000 students in attendance at 139 school presentations to 1,300 trees planted.

The City also launched an initiative to eliminate litter throughout Huntsville, an ongoing effort that involves Mayor Tommy Battle and the City Council.

“What Green Team has accomplished this year has been nothing less than spectacular,” said Brian Walker, City of Huntsville’s Director of Landscape Management. “It’s invigorating to see the community step up and make such an impactful difference and motivates us to continue our efforts. It makes Huntsville a better place. And there is always an opportunity for volunteers to join the effort.”

Volunteers are a big part of how Green Team accomplishes all that it does. Over 4,000 volunteers supported community cleanups, service projects and Adopt-a-Spot cleanups. Volunteers stepped up to start 34 new Adopt-a-Spot community cleanups, taking part in regular cleanups that make an immeasurable impact on removing litter from roadsides, parks and other areas.

Volunteers were an invaluable asset for Green Team at community cleanups.

Another 11 community cleanups were also held across the city. And five community gardens were refurbished or built, benefiting the environment along with food security objectives.

Green Team also had 4,000 visitors at its annual Earth Day celebration at Hays Nature Preserve even though a storm forced a brief suspension of the event.

Events are already being planned for 2025, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Cleanup on Jan. 18 at Campus 805 and surrounding areas. And don’t forget that Green Team provides all the tools you need: litter sticks, gloves, safety vests, garbage bags.
