Progress in South Huntsville Road Construction

City leaders, business representatives, and the Alabama Department of Transportation announced a new collaboration today to promote business while highway construction progresses on South Memorial Parkway. The City’s Traffic and Engineering Department produced eleven new business signs, which ALDOT installed along its orange construction cones, to direct motorists where to safely turn into shopping areas.

“We are grateful to play a role in this proactive partnership between the City, The South Huntsville Business Association and ALDOT,” said Dan Sanders, Director of Traffic Engineering.

ALDOT has worked diligently to ensure motorists have access to businesses while work occurs, but they recognize the sea of orange cones can confuse drivers on exactly where they may and may not turn. The signage will be a plus.

“Communication is key during challenging times, and this partnership is making it possible for businesses to stay in business during the construction,” said Jennie Robinson, District 3 Council Member. “Now we need the community’s help and we are asking residents to Shop South Parkway during this construction period.”

ALDOT has also stepped up its daily communication with businesses and media through alerts on traffic modifications as work progresses. In turn, SHBA businesses are using social media to help spread that word, such as 4Site’s clever Twitter posts with routine updates.

“We hope our community will visit the restaurants, shop in the stores and take advantage of the many services offered. Great things are coming to South Huntsville, and changes along South Parkway are leading the way,” said Robinson.
