South Huntsville Business Association Earns Main Street Designation

The City of Huntsville and the South Huntsville Business Association (SHBA) are honored to be selected as one of three new Main Street designated communities in Alabama this year.

The proposed Main Street district begins just north of Martin Road and includes the commercial corridor along the Parkway all the way to Ditto Landing and the Tennessee River.

District 3 Council Member Jennie Robinson, who has been instrumental in supporting SHBA, says the timing of the Main Street announcement is ideal.

“Construction on the Memorial Parkway overpasses is anticipated to end almost a year ahead of schedule, and we’re already seeing new investment and opportunities within the district,” said Robinson. “Having Main Street as a partner will help us continue the transformation and revitalization of South Parkway. “

Robinson believes the Main Street – SHBA collaboration “will provide a model that will benefit other districts in the city as they follow a similar process.”

More information about the Main Street program will be shared at a media kickoff event on June 12. Details about the kickoff will be forthcoming.

SHBA president Jerry Cargile says the next step is to hire a full time executive director. The executive director will report to the SHBA Board of Directors and will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for administration, staffing, programs, marketing, and fundraising. The new executive director will also have responsibility for execution of the SHBA mission, which is to support, promote, and advocate for the member businesses and the district.

“The Executive Director will also serve as the Main Street Program Director and will have the support of the entire Main Street Alabama team,” said Cargile.

Applications for the Executive Director position will open June 6.  Additional information will be available at that time for those who are interested.

For those who have a business or interest in the district, the next regular SHBA membership meeting will be held June 19, at 3 p.m., at the DoubleTree Hotel on Boulevard South.  For membership applications, email info@SHBA.biz.

“The SHBA is grateful to the City of Huntsville, the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, as well as our key business sponsors Freedom Real Estate and Haysland, and other business sponsors and partners for their commitment to support this effort which made our selection possible.”

SBHA is a non-profit advocacy organization, formed in 2015, “dedicated to developing a thriving business climate in South Huntsville by supporting existing businesses and developing new businesses.”  Visit SHBA on the web and on Facebook.
