Summer Slowdown begins as Huntsville Police ramp up traffic enforcement

The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is launching its annual Summer Slowdown traffic safety initiative on Thursday, May 21, with increased enforcement and public education efforts through Friday, July 31, to combat speeding and reckless driving during the busy summer travel season.
The initiative combines targeted traffic enforcement with heightened community awareness efforts to encourage motorists to slow down, obey traffic laws and make safer choices behind the wheel.
“Summer brings more people onto our roadways,” HPD Chief Kirk Giles said. “It’s very important for drivers to stay alert, slow down and understand that even one reckless decision behind the wheel can have devastating consequences.”
During last year’s Summer Slowdown campaign, HPD officers issued 4,446 citations and 2,146 warnings, while fatal wrecks during the enforcement period dropped to eight from 10 in 2024. The results underscore the impact proactive enforcement can have on roadway safety.
Throughout the campaign, officers will focus enforcement in areas with high crash volumes and frequent speeding complaints, targeting dangerous driving behaviors that contribute to serious crashes and fatalities.
HPD reminds drivers to:
- Obey posted speed limits
- Eliminate distractions while driving
- Allow extra travel time instead of rushing
- Watch for pedestrians, cyclists and children in neighborhoods
- Buckle up and ensure all passengers are wearing seat belts
HPD encourages everyone to make safe driving a priority this summer. Arriving a few minutes later is always better than not arriving at all.
