Wrangle weeds for a greener Huntsville at invasive plant removal event, March 7

Published on February 24, 2026

Huntsville’s Green Team is teaming up with the Land Trust of North Alabama and Wild Ones–North Alabama Chapter to give invasive plants the boot at a city-wide Weed Wrangle event on Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Weed Wrangle will allow participants to gain hands-on experience in identifying common invasive plants, learning proper removal techniques, and understanding how native plants help restore balance to our local environment.

The event will be held at the following three locations across Huntsville, reinforcing the idea that invasive species management is most effective when tackled together.

  • Southside Park (City of Huntsville Green Team): 16159 Chaney Thompson Rd.
  • Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve (Land Trust of North Alabama): 1263 Chapman Mountain Rd.
  • Monte Sano State Park (Wild Ones of North Alabama): S5105 Nolan Ave. SE
    • The Monte Sano State Park Weed Wrangle location requires a reservation in advance. Register at the volunteer link.

Invasive plants may look harmless at first, but they spread aggressively, crowd out native species and disrupt wildlife habitat. Detection and removal are critical. This city-wide volunteer effort helps prevent invasive plants from spreading into neighboring parks, greenways and residential areas.

“Invasive plants don’t stop at property lines. Seeds and vines can easily spread from unmanaged areas into preserves, waterways and backyards,” Green Team Manager Niki Sothers said. “By working together, Huntsville residents can protect biodiversity, improve habitat for pollinators and wildlife, and preserve the natural beauty that makes our community special.”

Individual volunteers as well as groups such as garden clubs, school groups, fraternity/sorority groups, civic organizations, church groups and native plant enthusiasts are welcome. No prior experience is needed, and volunteers must be 16 years or older. Each location will provide tools and guidance to assist volunteers. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and wear sturdy shoes.
