Huntsville ready to fulfill commitments for Space Command
Published on September 2, 2025
Space Command is coming to Huntsville.
What’s next?
Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal emerged as the clear choice in multiple surveys and reviews as the best home for U.S. Space Command. The decision to locate the four-star command in Alabama also came with commitments to ensure a smooth transition and operational readiness.
As part of its proposal, the City of Huntsville pledged $425 million in investments, most of which, about $385 million, is dedicated to transportation improvements. Many of these projects are already complete, ensuring the City is well ahead on its commitments.
Commitments
- $10 million for 200,000 square feet of temporary Class A office space
- $385 million for transportation improvements (more than 90% of City obligations)
Importantly, the road projects represent quality-of-life investments that would have been completed regardless of Space Command’s decision. City leaders have long prioritized road expansions and upgrades to keep pace with Huntsville’s rapid population and economic growth.
Partner Commitments
- State of Alabama: $8 million for senior leadership housing at Redstone Arsenal; $3 million for a national recruitment campaign
- Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA): $1 million economic development grant
Quality-of-Life Investments
Beyond transportation, the City is also delivering $150 million in planned and ongoing quality-of-life projects and $400 million in indirect transportation benefits. Recent and upcoming projects include:
- Raymond W. Jones Community Center
- Sandra Moon Community Complex
- Apollo Park at MidCity District
- The Orion Amphitheater and Huntsville Music Initiative
- Central Sports District at John Hunt, Merrimack, and Brahan Spring Parks
- Two new recreation centers under construction
- Hays Farm Park (under construction)
- Expanded greenways, including PARC Greenway and North Huntsville Greenway
Transportation Projects
Huntsville drivers are already seeing the benefits of completed projects such as:
- Expansion of Research Park Boulevard, the primary route to Redstone Arsenal
- Improvements to Zierdt Road and Martin Road
- Greenbrier Parkway
- Memorial Parkway/Martin Road interchange
- Widening of Cecil Ashburn Boulevard and U.S. 72
- Construction of Haysland Road
Major projects still in progress include the final phase of Interstate 565 expansion, Resolute Way (a new Arsenal connector to Gate 9), and the Arsenal East Connector, which will link I-565 directly to South Huntsville.
Ready for the Future
In many ways, the impact of Space Command’s relocation has already begun, thanks to Huntsville’s foresight and investment in infrastructure. With projects underway and new ones on the horizon, the City is well-prepared to welcome Space Command and support its mission.
Huntsville is ready.
