How to properly recycle lithium batteries

Published on October 20, 2025

From smartphones and laptops to power tools and even toothbrushes, lithium batteries power many of the items we use every day. While these batteries are a convenience, they also come with risks if they’re mishandled or disposed of incorrectly.

Lithium batteries don’t belong in household trash or curbside recycling carts. Throwing them away increases the risk of fires, threatens sanitation workers, and can lead to toxic materials leaching into the environment.

Instead, Huntsville residents are encouraged to bring old lithium batteries to the City’s Solid Waste Disposal Authority Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1055 A Cleaner. The facility offers a free, drive-through drop-off service for residents of batteries and other hazardous items. Hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lithium battery safety, including recycling them properly, is very important to prevent fires. Recycling these batteries is a safe choice, and the environmentally responsible choice. Green Team is encouraging everyone to do their part and think twice before tossing used batteries. Safe disposal protects your home, your neighbors, and the environment.
