The City of Huntsville is now accepting applications for the 2026-2027 cohort of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC), a yearlong leadership and civic engagement program that empowers high school students to learn about local government and serve their community.

Open to rising high school freshmen through seniors, MYAC offers students the opportunity to explore city operations, interact with civic leaders and help shape initiatives that impact Huntsville’s young residents.
Applications are due Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 10 p.m.
“The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council offers a unique chance for students to learn how their city works and to contribute in meaningful ways,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “Huntsville’s success depends on the voices and talents of the next generation, and we look forward to seeing this new group of young leaders step forward.”
To ensure fair representation of Huntsville youth, all applicants must both reside and attend school within Huntsville city limits. Residency and school enrollment will be verified during the application review process.
Applicants must also:
- Submit a completed application
- Include at least one letter of recommendation
- Provide an official or unofficial transcript verifying cumulative GPA
- Obtain parent/guardian permission if under age 18

Council members meet at least one Saturday each month and are encouraged to maintain strong attendance to remain in good standing. They also participate in volunteer projects, special events and learning experiences throughout the school year.
City Multicultural Affairs Director Dr. Randy Barbour, Jr., said MYAC continues to be a valuable investment in Huntsville’s future leaders.
“Our young people have powerful ideas, and MYAC gives them a platform to put those ideas into action,” Dr. Barbour said. “Each year, we see students grow in confidence, leadership and civic understanding. We’re excited to welcome applicants who want to make a real impact in Huntsville.”
