Road closures planned in Cummings Research Park for 2026 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships

Drivers should expect significant road closures and traffic impacts in Cummings Research Park beginning Thursday, Sept. 3, as Huntsville hosts the 2026 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships.

The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is advising drivers who travel through Research Park to plan ahead, allow additional travel time and use alternate routes when possible.

The racecourse will encompass the Explorer Boulevard loop in Cummings Research Park. During scheduled race and training periods, Explorer Boulevard and connecting roads providing access to the course will be closed to vehicular traffic.

The start/finish area on Explorer Boulevard between Farrow Road and Moquin Drive will remain closed through Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Scheduled road closures:

  • Thursday, Sept. 3: The course closes at 4 p.m. for training. Roads are expected to reopen around 7 p.m.
  • Friday, Sept. 4: Closures begin at 10 a.m. Roads are expected to reopen around 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sept. 5: Closures begin at 7 a.m. Roads are expected to reopen around 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, Sept. 6: Closures begin at 6 a.m. Roads are expected to reopen around 7:30 p.m.
  • Monday, Sept. 7: Closures begin at 5 a.m. Roads are expected to reopen around 9 p.m.

Apart from the start/finish area, all other portions of the course are expected to reopen by Monday, Sept. 7, around 9 p.m. Road reopening times are approximate and may change based on race operations and the time needed for crews to safely clear the course.

Drivers should remember:

  • Plan ahead: Avoid the racecourse and use alternate routes when possible.
  • Expect delays: Allow additional travel time when traveling in or around Cummings Research Park.
  • Follow traffic control: Never drive around barricades. Follow directions from police officers and event personnel.
  • Watch for cyclists: Athletes will also be training in the area. Slow down, give cyclists plenty of room and remain alert.

The event will bring hundreds of para-cyclists from around the world to Huntsville, with athletes traveling to and from Cummings Research Park throughout the week.
