City hires contractor to dismantle former City Hall building

The City of Huntsville is set to begin a 6-month demolition period to remove the old City Hall building at 308 Fountain Circle. The former City Hall opened in 1965 and closed earlier this year following the opening of a new location across the street at 305 Fountain Circle.
Britt Demolition and Recycling, Inc. received a $1,243,000 contract to perform the work in 240 days. The project’s first two to three months will focus on environmental abatement inside the building. This includes asbestos removal and other hazardous materials remaining in the structure. Once the building is reduced to its shell, the contractor will begin physical demolition of the building.
“There will be no implosion, and the building will ultimately come down by mechanical means,” said Ricky Wilkinson, Director of General Services. “Once the building is gone, the contractor will remove all debris, and the site will be ready for its next use.”
The next phase of the former City Hall site excites Mayor Tommy Battle.
“We’re adding the property to Big Spring Park, and I can’t think of a better public use for this land,” said Battle. “In the coming months, City planners will invite the community to public input sessions to view the new plans for the park.”
Bostick Landscape Architects were retained earlier this year to design the public space for the future Big Spring Park Expansion project. They have proposed two to three terrace plaza levels, a pavilion, new sidewalk/hardscape connections to Church Street, new landscaping and irrigation, additional lighting and electrical infrastructure. A large portion of the green space will remain on the sloped area.
The City anticipates having the newly expanded park site ready for public use in 2026.
