The Civic Engagement Academy, managed by the City’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, gives participants a behind-the-scenes look at how Huntsville operates, from public safety and infrastructure to parks, planning and community development.

The application deadline for the spring cohort is Friday, Feb. 13, at 10 p.m.

As new residents move to Huntsville and neighborhoods continue to expand, understanding how local government works has never been more important.

“Huntsville’s growth brings opportunity,” said Dr. Randy Barbour, the City’s Multicultural Affairs Director. “The Civic Engagement Academy equips residents with the knowledge and tools to engage meaningfully, serve their neighborhoods and help guide the future of our city.”

Through interactive sessions with City departments and leadership, participants learn how decisions are made, how services are delivered and how to effectively connect with City resources.

Graduates of the program often go on to serve on boards and commissions, lead neighborhood initiatives and become stronger advocates for their communities.

Space in the program is limited, and interested residents are encouraged to apply before the deadline. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside within Huntsville city limits.

Residents can apply online for the Civic Engagement Academy Spring 2026 cohort.
