The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) has arrested and charged a man with murder following a fatal shooting Wednesday morning.

On July 8 around 11 a.m., HPD officers responded to a shooting in the 7500 block of Highway 72. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound and learned the suspected shooter was inside a nearby business.

Officers entered the business and safely detained Austin Ballesteros, 22, of Huntsville, without incident.

The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died. He has been identified as Michael Wayne Walters, 44, of Huntsville.

HPD’s Major Crimes Unit responded to lead the investigation and determined that Walters and Ballesteros were involved in an argument before the shooting. During the argument, investigators say Ballesteros pulled out a firearm and shot Walters.

Ballesteros was booked into the Madison County Jail.
