HPD DUI Task Force to conduct Fourth of July safety checkpoint

The Huntsville Police Department’s (HPD) DUI Task Force will conduct a traffic safety checkpoint on Saturday, July 4, as part of its ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving and keep Huntsville roadways safe.
HPD is increasing enforcement efforts to deter dangerous behavior, remove impaired drivers from the road and protect the community.
“Celebrating the Fourth of July should never come at the expense of someone’s safety,” HPD DUI Task Force Sergeant Antonio Shorter said. “If alcohol is part of your plans, then plan for a sober ride before the celebration begins. One bad decision can have lifelong consequences for you, your family and innocent people on our roadways.”
Drivers passing through a checkpoint should be prepared to provide a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and current vehicle registration.
HPD works with the North Alabama Highway Safety Office (NAHSO) and reviews crash data to determine where enforcement efforts can have the greatest impact. Locations are selected based on several factors, including traffic volume, crash history and impaired driving trends.
Checkpoint operations may take place in multiple areas across the city, including:
- Jordan Lane and Sparkman Drive
- Mastin Lake Road and Pulaski Pike
- Bankhead Parkway and Douglas Lane
- Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road
- Church Street and Pratt Avenue
- Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street
- University Drive and Old Monrovia Road
- University Drive and Research Park Boulevard
HPD encourages anyone planning to consume alcohol to arrange transportation in advance by using a designated driver, rideshare service or another safe option.
Anyone who observes a suspected impaired driver should contact HPD’s non-emergency line at 256-722-7100 and provide the vehicle description, location and direction of travel. Call 911 in the event of an immediate emergency.
This checkpoint is funded through a grant from NAHSO, supporting local enforcement initiatives aimed at reducing impaired driving and improving roadway safety. All operations are conducted in accordance with established state and departmental procedures.
