HPD DUI Task Force to hold June 12 sobriety checkpoint focused on roadway safety

The Huntsville Police Department’s (HPD) DUI Task Force will conduct a safety checkpoint on Friday, June 12, as part of its ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving and keep Huntsville roadways safe.

The operation is designed to identify impaired drivers and deter dangerous driving behavior before it leads to a crash. Officers will be looking for drivers under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or other impairing substances. They will also monitor for other traffic violations or unlawful activity that could create a safety risk.

“Impaired driving is a choice, and it’s one of the most preventable causes of serious crashes on our roadways,” HPD DUI Task Force Sgt. Antonio Shorter said. “The goal of these checkpoints is simple: prevent dangerous driving, hold offenders accountable and protect lives.”

Drivers who pass through the checkpoint should be prepared to provide a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and current vehicle registration.

HPD works with the North Alabama Highway Safety Office (NAHSO) and reviews crash data to determine where enforcement efforts can have the greatest impact. Locations are selected based on several factors, including traffic volume, crash history and impaired driving trends.

Checkpoint operations may take place in multiple areas across the city, including:

  • Jordan Lane and Sparkman Drive
  • Mastin Lake Road and Pulaski Pike
  • Bankhead Parkway and Douglas Lane
  • Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road
  • Church Street and Pratt Avenue
  • Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street
  • University Drive and Old Monrovia Road
  • University Drive and Research Park Boulevard

HPD reminds the public that anyone planning to consume alcohol should arrange transportation in advance. Use a designated driver, rideshare service or another safe option to get home.

Anyone who observes a suspected impaired driver should contact HPD’s non-emergency line at 256-722-7100 and provide the vehicle description, location and direction of travel. Call 911 in the event of an immediate emergency.

This checkpoint is funded through a grant from NAHSO, supporting local enforcement initiatives aimed at reducing impaired driving and improving roadway safety. All operations are conducted in accordance with established state and departmental procedures.
