The local community cleanup event was part of National Cleanup Day, which included activities in all 50 states that brings together more than two million volunteers. It’s the largest single-day cleanup in the United States.

In Huntsville, 142 volunteers joined together to collect 226 bags of litter and clear six inlets on Holmes Avenue. About two acres of ALDOT property was cleaned by CT Garvin and a full dump tailer of fallen tree limbs were removed from Hillendale Park while a handicap-accessible cross was cleared of debris as well.

Several groups took part in the cleanup:

  • Gamma Phi from Alabama A&M University
  • Kappa Alpha Psi Inc.
  • House Arrest II-Championship Dance Team Inc. Chapter 6 – Alabama A&M
  • Eta Kappa Tau – Alabama A&M
  • SOAR – University of Alabama in Huntsville
  • Rotaract Club
  • New Century Technology High School Key Club
  • Senior Service College Fellowship
  • National Society of Black Engineers – Bulldog Chapter

A round of applause for all who helped make Huntsville more beautiful. And to cleanup volunteer Deidra Bigham, who assisted Green Team in distributing supplies.

The cleanup yielded tremendous results but also underscored the urgency for everyone in Huntsville to be conscious of littering and eager to do what they can to help.
