Reuniting lost pets with their families starts long before they wander from home. That’s why Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) is encouraging residents to take advantage of its online pet licensing portal, making it easier than ever to register or renew pet licenses from the comfort of home. After all, for many lost pets, home is a click away.

Under City ordinance, all dogs and cats 4 months of age and older are required to be licensed annually. Through the City’s online pet registration system, pet owners can complete the process anytime, eliminating the need for a trip to the shelter. Information about registration requirements and fees is available on the City’s pet licensing webpage.

A current pet license allows Animal Services to identify lost pets faster and reconnect them with their family, whether the animal arrives at the shelter or are found by one of our field officers. When combined with a collar, identification tag and microchip, pet licensing provides another important layer of protection should a pet become separated from its family. Information about identification tags and microchipping is also available through the City’s pet licensing resources.

“None of us expects our pet to become lost, but being prepared can make all the difference,” said John Fischer, Director of Huntsville Animal Services. “A current pet license gives us another tool to identify an animal and connect it with its owner. It’s a simple step that helps create a faster path home when pets and families become separated.”

In addition to supporting pet reunification efforts, the online portal offers a convenient option for busy residents. Pet owners can submit required documentation, complete registration and renew licenses online whenever it is most convenient for them. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required, and owners may qualify for reduced licensing fees by providing proof of spay or neuter status.

“We know that pets are family,” said Fischer. “Every pet deserves the best chance of finding its way back home, and keeping your pet’s license current, you’re helping protect that connection.”

HAS encourages pet owners to take a few minutes this season to verify that their pet’s license, identification tag and microchip information are all current. A current pet license is one of the simplest ways pet owners can help ensure their animals have a path back home if they ever become lost. Now, with online registration, protecting family pets is easier than ever.
