The City of Huntsville advanced plans for an extensive renovation of the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center and its campus, entering into an architectural design services contract with Nola | VanPeursem Architects.
District 1 Council Member Michelle Watkins held a town hall on April 2 to discuss the project, which included a presentation from Nola | VanPeursem Architects.
“This is a much-needed rehabilitation of a popular and busy recreation center and I am grateful for the support of my colleagues on the City Council and the City administration for moving forward on this project,” Council Member Watkins said. “Once completed, it will be like a new facility and one that all of Huntsville can be proud of and enjoy.”
Proposed interior improvements including new finishes throughout, rearranging the building entrance and lobby area, replacement of HVAC units, adding air conditioning in the gym along with upgrades to the pool and pool equipment.
Exterior improvements include a new outdoor basketball court, new pickleball courts, upgraded playground, expanded parking area, parking lot drainage improvements, relocated bus stop and improvements to the walking path.
“The Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center is a well-known and widely used recreation center,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “Many residents have made great memories there. It’s where kids have grown up, where community has come together and where lifelong connections have been built. A renovation of the center will allow for more of those moments to be made well into the future.”
