Huntsville celebrates National Community Development Week with expanded home rehabilitation efforts

The City of Huntsville is joining communities nationwide in celebrating National Community Development Week, an annual opportunity to highlight the impact of the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and recognize how these investments strengthen neighborhoods, support vulnerable residents and expand access to safe, stable housing.

Each year, Huntsville uses CDBG funds to deliver essential home rehabilitation services to low‑income seniors, helping longtime residents remain safely in the homes and neighborhoods they love.

These improvements often include roofing repairs, new siding, accessibility upgrades and other critical fixes that would otherwise be financially out of reach.

This year, Huntsville is expanding its efforts by completing two home rehabilitation projects. In addition, the City is set to receive an extra $500,000 in CDBG funding for the 2026-2027 program year, allowing even more seniors to benefit.

“Our Community Development Department uses these grants for projects that make a real difference,” Mayor Battle said. “As Huntsville continues to grow, we are committed to ensuring that growth supports the people and neighborhoods who have built this community. That’s exactly what our Community Development team does year-round.”

Community Development Manager Scott Erwin said CDBG continues to be one of Huntsville’s most effective tools for supporting vulnerable residents.

“These projects may seem small on the surface – a repaired roof, new siding, accessibility improvements – but to the seniors we serve, they are life‑changing,” Erwin said. “They mean safety. They mean dignity. And they mean the ability to age in place in the community they’ve called home for decades.”

National Community Development Week continues through Friday and provides residents an opportunity to learn more about how federal funding is used locally to improve housing, expand public services and enhance quality of life across Huntsville.
