Huntsville organizations to open warming centers this week

Published on December 19, 2022

With temperatures expected to drop significantly tonight, Dec. 22, the City of Huntsville is supporting local partners in opening warming centers for the community.

The National Weather Service reports dangerously cold temperatures will occur tonight and the evening of Friday, Dec. 23, as an Arctic air mass moves into the area. Temperatures will remain below freezing for 86 hours total, and a wind chill warning is in effect from midnight Friday to noon Saturday, Dec. 24. Wind gusts near 35 mph are also possible.

Accordingly, the City is working with the Salvation Army and Downtown Rescue Mission to open warming centers at the following locations:

Weather permitting, Huntsville Police will be available to transport individuals to the warming centers. To request a ride, please call HPD’s non-emergency phone number, 256-722-7100.

Huntsville Transit will also provide free rides to and from the warming centers. Transit will operate 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Dec. 22-23, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dec. 24. The department is closed Sunday. Learn more about the City’s Transit offerings by visiting our website.
