Is your yard ‘A Cut Above’? Join the District 1 Summer Landscaping Challenge!

Mowing the grass. Keeping the weeds at bay. Mulching the flower beds. These tasks and more give Huntsville a leading edge when it comes to having a beautiful community.
To reward the many homeowners in District 1 who go above and beyond to keep their yards clean and attractive, City Council Member Devyn Keith is inviting residents to participate in the inaugural A Cut Above District 1 Summer Landscaping Challenge.
“Maintaining a lawn takes a lot of work,” Keith said. “We want to show our gratitude for all who are making D1 shine bright. With summer underway, there’s no better time to showcase our neighborhoods while also introducing a little friendly competition between residents.”
The front-yard challenge launches Wednesday, July 6, and concludes Saturday, Aug. 6. Citizens in District 1 can compete for up to three titles:
- Best Landscaping (focuses on textures, colors, composition and more technical aspects of landscaping)
- Most Captivating Floral Display
- Best Curb Appeal (overall quality)

Council Member Keith is organizing the residential landscaping challenge, which will include prizes for all three winners. Citizens who are selected by a committee composed of City leaders will also receive a complimentary yard sign designating their award.
The goal of A Cut Above is to strengthen partnerships between the City of Huntsville and District 1 while also fostering cooperation and pride in the D1 residential community.
“We are excited to kick off this first-time competition and hope it becomes a tradition each summer in D1,” Keith said. “Whether you’re already maintaining your yard or want to get started, this is a great opportunity to get outside and inspire positive change in your community.”
Keith will be working with homeowners’ associations, business groups, recreation centers, faith organizations, public facilities and more to help get the word out about the competition.
