Leaf it right: A resident’s guide to curbside collection and yard debris

leaves along a street curbFall foliage and, eventually, those leaves falling to the ground are the beauty of autumn. But that beauty can quickly turn ugly if leaves aren’t properly disposed.

Leaves can clog storm drains, gutters and sewers, creating unwanted problems for residents and placing an extra burden on the City’s Public Works Department. It also violates City ordinances to vanquish the leaves or other yard debris into the street. It can lead to street flooding or impede traffic.

Residents are required to keep curbs clear of leaves and other debris in front of their homes.

“We just ask everyone to bag their leaves, secure the top of the bag and place them on the curbside,” Public Works Director Chris McNeese said. “Public Works will come by and collect those bags and properly dispose of the leaves. Through this partnership, a lot of problems can be avoided.”

Bags of leaves should not weigh more than 50 pounds. McNeese also cautioned that bags should be placed on the curbside at least five feet from any obstacle and away from any low-hanging limbs or wires.

Residents should be aware that contractors are responsible for removing any debris generated from their work at your home, such as cutting down tree limbs to collecting and bagging leaves.

An alternative is to mow over leaves. The resulting tiny pieces of leaves pose less of a clogging threat to storm drains, are far less likely to be blown into the street and can provide nutrients for your grass.
