The latest addition to Huntsville’s largest park elevates recreation to its highest level yet.
Mayor Tommy Battle led a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the John Hunt Park Recreation Center, creating a northern anchor to the park and expanding fun and relaxing amenities for residents.
Accommodating basketball, volleyball and pickleball, the 60,850 square-foot facility also includes a fitness room, multi-purpose rooms, office space and concessions.
Located on 8½ acres within John Hunt Park, the recreation center further strengthens the park’s more than 435 acres of recreational offerings.
“John Hunt Park is a valuable recreation asset to the Huntsville community,” said Mayor Battle. “Opening the John Hunt Park Recreation Center reinforces our commitment to providing accessible quality of life resources for Huntsville residents.”
Located at 3035 Leeman Ferry Rd., the facility features a gymnasium customizable to four high school regulation basketball courts or eight high school regulation volleyball courts.
Exterior work includes a structure that provides cover and lighting for 24 competitive play pickleball courts and one elite play pickleball court.
“This recreation center is a valuable addition that will greatly enrich John Hunt Park,” said Council Member Bill Kling. “Opening the center reflects advocacy for residents across the city.”
The new recreation center was designed by William M. Boehm & Associates and Fite Building Company constructed the facility.
Programming for the John Hunt Park Recreation Center will include activities such as open play basketball, volleyball and opportunities for tournament hosting. Residents can visit Parks & Recreation’s online registration platform to browse rental availability and activities.
“The John Hunt Park Recreation Center elevates and supports the many activities hosted in John Hunt Park,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “Whether it’s a basketball, volleyball or pickleball tournament, the recreation center is sure to be the backdrop for memories and achievements that will last a lifetime.”
