Mayor Tommy Battle presents proposed balanced budget for 2027 fiscal year

With emphasis on continuing to enhance quality of life for Huntsville residents, Mayor Tommy Battle presented his balanced budget for the 2027 fiscal year to the City Council at Thursday’s meeting.
From more than $22 million for road resurfacing and maintenance to park expansions to further investment in public safety, the budget reinforces Huntsville’s infrastructure while continuing to make the city a more attractive place to work, play and raise a family.
“Making life better for our residents is always foremost in our minds as we put together the City’s budget,” Mayor Battle said. “That includes being excellent stewards of taxpayer dollars while reinvesting those funds into our communities in a strategic way that provides something for everyone.”
The Mayor’s proposed operating budget for the General Fund FY27 is $360,593,840, which includes $14,788,543 for outside agencies. The Lodging & Liquor fund also provides $17,015,229 for outside agencies.
Departmental and Capital Plans funding highlights of the proposed FY27 Budget:
- New road improvement projects totaling $17.5M consisting of County Line Road, Edinburg Drive Resolute Way along with moving forward with the design on the next phase of Northern Bypass East of Memorial Parkway
- Multimodal transportation project consisting of new greenways and sidewalks totaling $15M
- Reinvestment corridors near Research Park, Mill Creek, and downtown totaling $18M
- Road resurfacing and maintenance totaling over $22.3 million
- Authorizes an addition of 18 public safety personnel
- Multi-year capital plan provides for a Police precinct, multiple fire stations and library facilities
- Improvements and expansions at several parks around the City
- Commercial redevelopment along Memorial Parkway
- Continued investment in the City’s greenway network
- 2% cost-of-living adjustment for City employees
The City Council will discuss the budget at a work session on Friday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. in Council Chamber and is expected to vote on the budget at its next regular meeting on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 5:30 p.m.
