The North Alabama Drug Task Force (NADTF), working alongside Region F of the Alabama Drug Enforcement Task Force, arrested a man after seizing more than one kilogram of fentanyl destined for north Alabama communities.
On Friday, May 8, agents arrested Michael Fitts, 45, of Huntsville, on charges of trafficking fentanyl following a month-long investigation into large-scale narcotics distribution in the region.
During the investigation, agents stopped Fitts while he was transporting approximately 1.035 kilograms of fentanyl into Huntsville. Investigators believe the narcotics were intended for distribution across multiple north Alabama counties.
The estimated street value of the fentanyl seized is approximately $207,000. Fitts was booked into the Madison County Jail on a $1,500,000 bond.
According to investigators, one kilogram of fentanyl represents approximately 500,000 potentially lethal doses.
“This seizure removed a dangerous amount of fentanyl from our streets before it could be distributed,” NADTF Commander Lt. Joseph Kennington said. “One kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to devastate communities across North Alabama.”
NADTF remains committed to targeting individuals responsible for trafficking dangerous narcotics into the region and will continue working alongside local, state and federal partners to combat the ongoing fentanyl crisis.
