Preservation & Placemaking Talk and Panel to take place May 16 at 6 p.m.

On Tuesday, May 16 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the A/V Room at Campus No. 805, the Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission along with the City of Huntsville’s preservationist, Jessica White, will present a free, educational seminar focused on how cities can embrace a strategy of adaptive reuse or “reurbanism” to ultimately attract and appeal to citizens and visitors alike.

Preservation & Placemaking: How celebrating our history can enhance our future

The presentation will be led by Cheryl Morgan, Emerita Professor of Architecture in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture of Auburn University, will speak on historic preservation’s important role in creating and maintaining unique and impactful community spaces.

 

“Not your grandmother’s preservation: A panel discussion”

6:45 p.m.

Immediately following Morgan’s presentation will be a panel discussion led by the Historic Huntsville Foundation’s Executive Director Donna Castellano. Panelists are listed below:

Jennifer Moore, Vice President of Tourism for the Huntsville-Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau

 

Preservation Month Activities

To celebrate Huntsville’s historic places and older buildings during Preservation Month, the City is leading a number of activities to recognize places that matter. Mayor Battle is recognizing four locations throughout the month of Mayor and City Council members will also recognize re-urbanism projects in their districts by presenting the owners with “This Place Matters” decals to place on their buildings.

The public is encouraged to participate by snapping a photo of their favorite historic building and posting it to their social media platform with the hashtag #ThisPlaceMattersHsv.
