Zero Waste Week: Swap it like you mean it
Published on
A zero‑waste kitchen doesn’t require a full overhaul immediately, but if you start with just a few smart swaps, it will add up over time. With Zero Waste Week kicking off September 7, now’s a great moment to take stock of what you use every day and refresh a few habits.
“Creating a zero‑waste kitchen doesn’t happen overnight, but every small change matters,” said Huntsville’s Green Team Manager Niki Sothers. “When we choose reusable options or rethink how we store food, we’re taking meaningful steps toward a cleaner, more sustainable community.”

Swap Out Disposable Bags
Skip single‑use plastic bags and try reusable silicone pouches, washable food‑storage bags or glass containers. They’re perfect for leftovers, lunches and meal prep.
Trade Paper Towels for Reusables
Keep washable cloths or repurposed rags within easy reach for spills, dishes and countertop cleanup. You’ll cut waste without sacrificing convenience.
Choose Reusable Wraps
Beeswax wraps, silicone lids and bowl covers keep food fresh just as well as plastic wrap—and without the trash. Often, a simple container with a lid works just as well.
Rethink Storage Before Buying More
Check your own shelves first. Clean glass jars from pasta sauce, pickles or other pantry staples make great storage for dry goods, leftovers and homemade sauces.
Reduce Food Waste
Waste isn’t just packaging – it’s also the food itself. Plan meals around what you already have, freeze items before they spoil and get creative with leftovers. Veggie scraps make great broth, and overripe fruit shines in smoothies or baked recipes. Composting is another simple way to keep scraps out of the trash.
“Zero Waste Week is a reminder that sustainability starts right where we live – in our kitchens, with our everyday choices. When each of us adopts even one or two waste‑reducing habits, the collective impact across our city is huge,” Sothers said.
Start with just one or two easy swaps and let your zero‑waste habits grow from there. Think of Zero Waste Week as a fun challenge…a chance to get creative, rethink what you toss and discover new ways to use what you already have. Maybe that leftover veggie scrap becomes tomorrow’s soup starter, or that jar you almost recycled becomes your new favorite storage container.
These small, simple changes save money, shrink your trash and make your kitchen feel a little more clever and eco‑friendly. And when all of us join in, even in tiny ways, we help build a greener Huntsville that keeps the momentum going long after Zero Waste Week wraps up.
