HPD Investigator honored with life-saving medal for heroic rescue

Published on June 26, 2025

During the Huntsville City Council meeting on Thursday, June 26, Huntsville Police Department (HPD) Investigator Scott Northcutt was awarded a life-saving medal for his bravery and selflessness during a fiery crash that nearly claimed the life of a fellow officer. Mayor Battle, Huntsville Police Deputy Chiefs Hudson, Brooks and Johnson stand on stage in City Council Chambers to present Investigator Northcutt a life-saving medal.

The incident occurred on Feb. 18, when Northcutt came upon a serious crash at Pulaski Pike and Mallory Avenue. A large fireball marked the scene. As he approached, Northcutt saw a Huntsville Police patrol car in flames with an officer trapped inside.

Without hesitation, he rushed to the burning vehicle, where he found the officer severely injured – his uniform on fire and unable to escape due to a broken wrist. Northcutt pulled the officer from the car and rolled him to the ground to extinguish the flames.

Just moments later, the vehicle became fully engulfed, igniting live ammunition inside. Northcutt shielded the officer with his own body and moved him to safety.

The heat was so intense, parts of Northcutt’s jacket melted. Thanks to his quick, fearless actions, the injured officer survived.

The life-saving medal is one of HPD’s top honors, awarded in accordance with its official directive on Awards and Commendations. Northcutt’s courage and selflessness under pressure are a credit to himself, the department and the City of Huntsville.
