Animal Services ‘Boom Proof Your Pet’ event returns June 14 to Jaycee Building

Fireworks season is fast approaching, and Huntsville Animal Services (HAS) will host “Boom Proof Your Pet” on Sunday, June 14 from 2–6 p.m. at the Jaycee Building in John Hunt Park, 2180 Airport Rd. The free event helps families with pets take proactive steps to prepare and protect their pets to prevent the holiday surge of scared, lost animals.

The annual community event equips dog and cat owners with the tools and resources needed to keep pets safe, healthy and at home during the festivities. The event is open to Huntsville and Madison County pet owners, but registration is required.

“Every year, we see pets arrive after bolting in fear from fireworks,” said HAS Director John Fischer. “Our goal is to get ahead of the problem by empowering families with what they need before the celebrations begin.”

All veterinary services, vaccines, microchips and pet food at the event is being sponsored by the Huntsville Animal Service Foundation.

Attendees must register in advance, and to participate, the microchip service is REQUIRED to get any other services or supplies. If pets are already microchipped, they may attend for the additional services, but attendees still must register. Event includes:

  • Microchipping
  • Collars, leashes and personalized ID tags
  • Onsite DAPP vaccinations and rabies by local veterinarians
  • Spay/neuter vouchers (for City of Huntsville residents only)
  • Dog toys and other giveaways
  • Pet Food

Fischer said HAS remains committed to reducing the annual influx of frightened, displaced pets that typically flood shelters each July.

“We’re proud that Huntsville is leading the way on proactive pet safety,” Fischer said. “When we provide microchips, IDs and education upfront, we dramatically increase the chances of pets staying with the families who love them.”

Early preparation remains key to reducing the number of lost pets during and after holiday firework displays. If you want to know what to expect, the services provided and how to register, check out the “Know Before You Go” video.

“We helped about 200 animals last year, and our goal is to double that number,” Fischer said. “If the community spreads the word and shows up, we can reduce shelter crowding and make Huntsville an even safer, happier place for pets.”
