Call to serve: HPD accepting applications for police dispatchers

If you are looking for a fast-paced career where every call makes a difference, the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is accepting applications for police dispatcher positions.

HPD dispatchers are the first voice most people hear when they need help. They answer emergency and non-emergency calls, gather critical information and dispatch the appropriate emergency response.

“Every call starts and ends with our dispatchers,” HPD Sergeant Dana Springfield said. “From the first call for help to the final update from officers in the field, their work helps guide the response from beginning to end.”

The position requires strong communication skills, composure, compassion and discretion. Dispatchers must be able to remain calm under pressure, multitask and make quick decisions while assisting callers and first responders.

Applications opened June 8 and will be accepted through Aug. 10. Applicants must apply before scheduling an aptitude test, which will be available July 6 through Aug. 24. Applicants must pass the test to be considered for an interview.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Be able to type at least 30 words per minute

The position starts at $47,070.40 annually, with City benefits beginning on the employee’s first day of employment. The starting pay is among the most competitive for dispatcher positions in Alabama.

Applicants selected to move forward after testing may be required to complete an interview, drug screening and a polygraph.
