Climb, slide, swing and run at Huntsville’s newest, Santa-approved playground

Published on December 19, 2023

The City of Huntsville’s newest playground opened with great fanfare at the Sandra Moon Community Complex during a ribbon-cutting ceremony with City leaders, led by caroling children and Santa Claus.

“Just in time for the holidays, we are delighted to present this amazing playground to the children of Huntsville,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “We hope it will bring joy and inspire imagination for many years to come.”

The beautiful new 18,000-square-foot playground features artificial turf and rubber safety surfacing to create a vibrant and secure environment for children to explore. Children will discover a Rocket Ship, climbing and play structures, slides, swings, merry-go-round and a sensory wave arch – all promising endless adventures. Adults will find ample benches and sunshades, along with plenty of convenient parking. The park is fully fenced, ADA accessible, and is one of many recreational activities available at the Sandra Moon Community Complex.

“This ADA-accessible playground is a testament to our commitment to ensuring that every member of our community, regardless of ability, can partake in the simple joys of play,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett.

Following a ribbon-cutting to open the new facility, Santa Claus led children into the new park to try out the “best Christmas gift ever!”

“The most wonderful Christmas gift is seeing a community come together to support our quality-of-life programs and amenities for our families,” said District 3 Council Member Dr. Jennie Robinson. “When complete, the Sandra Moon Community Complex will be a destination for learning, the arts, recreation and play. The best is yet to come!”

The $740,000 playground is included in Phase 3 of the City’s master renovation plan for the Sandra Moon Community Complex. It includes a generous $180,000 donation by Madison County Commissioner Phil Riddick.

Before the grand opening, the South Huntsville Public Library at the Sandra Moon Community Complex hosted “March to the Playground,” a sing-along and puppet show with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The children and attendees marched and caroled to the new playground to celebrate and explore their new gift.
