The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) officially welcomed the 74th Academy Session graduates during a ceremony held Friday, June 26, at the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering.

After 19 weeks of rigorous training, the following recruits earned their badges as new HPD officers:

  • James England Jr.
  • Lawrence Gress
  • Michael Hammon
  • Peter Otis
  • Burnard Thomas
  • Michael Thompson

The ceremony brought together City leadership, HPD Command Staff, training personnel and families to recognize the accomplishments of the graduating class.

HPD Chief Kirk Giles emphasized the significance of the moment and the responsibility that comes with the badge.

“You only get one chance to make a first impression – and in this profession, that impression carries weight for a long time,” Chief Giles said. “Take pride in what you do and the fact that you represent something bigger than yourself.”

Mayor Tommy Battle offered strong support for HPD and the new officers stepping into service.

“Every day, the people of Huntsville will look to you for help, guidance and protection,” Mayor Battle said. “You have decided to step forward when someone needs help. That decision speaks volumes about your character.”

The graduates will now enter the Field Training Officer phase, where they will spend 14 weeks applying what they learned in the Academy in real-life situations.
