Huntsville Parks & Recreation is excited to offer its second year of free Adaptive Basketball to those with physical and mental disabilities. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate every Saturday January-March (except February 15) during the time slot that is best for them at Optimist Recreation Center.

2-4 p.m.: 18 years old and under

4-6 p.m.: 18 years old and over (or advanced players)

“This program was very successful last year,” explained Tia Clayton, Parks & Recreation Special Populations Supervisor. “Some of the players had never touched a basketball before and after a few visits you couldn’t keep them away from playing and interacting with the other participants!”

Parks & Recreation Director Steve Ivey is excited to have the flourishing Special Populations program. “A couple of years ago I saw the need for recreation opportunities that were available for all different abilities,” said Ivey. “After our team hired Tia, she hit the ground running and has had numerous successful events and programs for different abilities and ages. Some of the favorites have been our yearly event at Topgolf Huntsville and Fall Festival.”
