Sustainable New Year’s Resolutions

Published on

A new year brings the perfect chance to reset habits and renew your commitment to living in a way that supports a cleaner, healthier community. Sometimes the most meaningful actions start right in our own neighborhoods. If you’re hoping to create greener habits in 2026, here are some practical resolutions to consider:

1. Join (or Start!) an Adopt-A-Spot

By joining or starting an Adopt-A-Spot crew, you commit that for one year you and your crew will spend one hour each month picking up litter on a street, at a local park or somewhere in the City. Not ready to commit for a full year? Green Team will provide supplies for organized group clean-up efforts (like school, church or veterans groups), or for those wanting to do local litter walks on their own. A cleaner, greener community benefits everyone. To learn about how you can be a part of Adopt-A-Spot or organizing your own cleanup, call Green Team at 256-532-5326 or visit the Green Team website to find out more.

2. Support Alabama’s Native Ecosystems

Make this the year you plant native! Alabama’s indigenous plants are resilient, drought-tolerant and great for pollinators. Replacing even a small patch of lawn with native plants can reduce your water use and create habitat for butterflies, bees and birds. If you’re not ready to plant, resolve to remove invasives species in your yard, like the Chinese Privet, or community spaces and wooded areas.

3. Shop Local: Farmers Markets

Huntsville has some amazing farmers markets offering locally grown produce and goods like honey, eggs, bread, dairy, flowers and plants. Buying local reduces transportation emissions and helps support Alabama farmers. Plus, your meals will be fresher and more flavorful. Consider setting a goal to buy at least one local product each week.

4. Reduce Home Energy Waste

Even simple actions can trim your energy use and lower your utility bills. Swap old bulbs for LEDs, unplug electronics when not in use and check weather stripping around doors and windows.

5. Start a Compost Routine

Composting at home is easier than many people realize and Huntsville’s relatively mild winters make it possible year-round. Whether you choose a simple backyard bin or a countertop system, composting keeps nutrients cycling and gives you rich soil for gardening.

6. Explore Huntsville’s Great Outdoors

One of the best ways to stay motivated about sustainability is to enjoy the natural beauty in our area. Hike through Monte Sano State Park, paddle the Flint River, or bring the kids to the natural playground at Hays Nature Preserve. Spending more time outside strengthens the connection to nature for all ages, and it’s great for your mental health, too.

7. Choose Reusable Whenever Possible

Make 2026 the year you cut back on single-use plastics. Bring reusable bags to the grocery store, keep a refillable water bottle handy at work and home, and stash reusable utensils in your lunch bag or car. These simple swaps add up fast, especially for families.

Sustainability is about progress. By choosing just one or two of these resolutions, you can help keep Huntsville clean and green every day. Here’s to a brighter, more sustainable 2026!
