HPD’s Summer Slowdown shows impact with stronger enforcement and safer streets

Published on August 22, 2025

The Huntsville Police Department’s (HPD) Summer Slowdown traffic safety initiative ended on Tuesday, Aug. 12, with enforcement efforts resulting in more speeding citations and safer roads across the City.

From June 9 to Aug. 12, officers issued 4,446 citations and 2,146 warnings to drivers. During the same period in 2024, HPD reported 3,798 citations and 2,324 warnings. Fatal wrecks during this year’s initiative dropped to eight, down from 10 recorded in 2024.

“The numbers speak for themselves: more enforcement, fewer crashes,” Chief Kirk Giles said. “Targeted enforcement works, and it’s making a real difference on Huntsville roads.”

The Summer Slowdown campaign is part of HPD’s ongoing commitment to improve roadway safety by increasing enforcement during peak travel months, raising awareness about dangerous driving behaviors and encouraging responsible driving throughout the community.

HPD would like to thank drivers who are doing their part to keep Huntsville’s roads safe.
