City of Huntsville announces second cohort of Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council

The City of Huntsville is proud to welcome 30 students to the second cohort of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC), a yearlong leadership and civic engagement program designed to elevate youth voices in municipal decision‑making.
MYAC, led by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, provides rising high school freshmen through seniors the opportunity to learn how their city works, collaborate with civic leaders and contribute youth perspectives to community initiatives.
Students gain hands‑on experience with City operations and participate in projects that encourage service, engagement and leadership development. The program launched in 2025 to enthusiastic participation from students across Huntsville.
Members of the first MYAC cohort shared that the program gave them a deeper understanding of civic engagement, confidence in their ability to lead and a meaningful platform to advocate for youth needs.
Dr. Randy Barbour, Jr., who oversees MYAC through the Office of Multicultural Affairs, celebrated the incoming class and the program’s continued momentum.
“This program empowers young people to learn how their city works and to meaningfully shape the community around them,” said Dr. Barbour. “Our first cohort set a strong foundation, and I’m excited to see how this next group will build upon their legacy.”

Five students from MYAC’s first cohort are returning, which will provide valuable continuity, mentorship and leadership for the second cohort throughout the year.
“Huntsville’s young people have powerful ideas, and MYAC gives them a platform to put those ideas into action,” Dr. Barbour said. “Their voices help ensure that our city grows in ways that reflect the needs and perspectives of the next generation.”
